Batam Island Nightlife

Where to Go after Dark in Batam Island

Nagoya is the nightlife entertainment district in Batam. There are several things to do; you can start your evening at the outdoor food hall called Santai (meaning 'relaxing' in Indonesian) then simply set off to one of many karaoke bars near Lucky Plaza. If you are a real sports buff, there are several Irish pubs broadcasting live football matches or Formula One on a big screen.

You may try the eclectic nightclubs before heading back for a good night's sleep. An added bonus for being a duty zone, you can get Heineken and other imported beers for nearly the same price as Bintang. And although you might find the nightlife scene in Batam different from what you are used to back home, it is worth experiencing.

Karaoke

There are literally hundreds of karaoke bars located in almost every direction of Nagoya. It is very popular with Chinese and Singaporean, so most of the songs are in Chinese with some well-known English songs. Beside a large karaoke hall, many of them also provide private rooms for a group of three-to-eight people or more, an option to avoid bad singers in the open lounge who seem to think they are competing on Pop Idol. Below is the list to sample:

Merlion Hotel

Location: Sriwijaya Road, Nagoya

Kompleks Cipta Utam

Location: Near Center Point shopping centre, Nagoya

Permata Indah

Location: Windsor Central, Nagoya

Barong Karaoke

Location: Puri Garden Hotel

Nightclubs

Nightclubs or discotheques here usually play alternate between techno music and some up-to-date pop. Some places also have live bands, playing English, Indonesian, Chinese, and Singaporean songs. The nightclubs here open from 19:00 onwards and all get busy around midnight and run until 05:00. No strict dress-code although flip-flops are not allowed for clubbers’ own safety. Below is the list of some famous clubs for all party animals:

Nagoya Entertainment District Pub Scene

Nagoya entertainment district

Or just called NED, this compact district is bounded by the Melia Panorama, Goodway and Harmoni hotels. Lucy's Oarhouse is easiest to find, turn left out of the Melia’s front entrance and walk 100m. The famous PP Banana GoGo is upstairs. Rio Rita is over the road. Turn right out Lucy's front door and you can see the Jungle Bar, Classics, Red Cock, Bistro, Ice Pub and Steps Music Lounge. McDonald's, Kentucky Chicken and several money changers are in the same area.

Also find the Memori Karoake, opposite the Melia and the Hawaii karaoke, beside the Harmoni (next to McDonalds). There are dozens of other karaokes and massage parlours in Nagoya. Among the better known are the Queen 8933 Massage. A kilometer away in the Pelita area, find Hotel Pelita karaoke, Hollywood “Sports Massage” and Maxim "nightclub" .

Pleasant evening drinks

Try the Planet Hotel’s rooftop bar (22nd floor) for a nice view of Nagoya and the Singapore Straits.

There are pleasant WINE BARS at Goodway and Harmoni hotels . Try a Cheese Platter at the Goodway’s Hotel Wine Bar for Rp45,000.

Live music nightspots

The most popular is the Tavern in the Melia. Also try the NoName in the Harmoni and Summit at the Planet hotel. All start getting busy by 10pm.

Discos

Batam has several large discos. All are very dark, loud and smoky. The Pacific is the biggest and has the best sound system. All get busy around midnight.

Raunchy bars

Try the Jungle and Ice Pub. The PP Banana is the wildest and most fun - opens from 2pm on Fri/Sat/Sun, from 6.30pm midweek. See www. getit.at/gogobanana
